Lawrence Lee Nicholson, Sr., affectionately known as Larry or Nick, was born on August 25, 1940, in Greenville, MS, to Clarence Nicholson and Hilda Jennings and was the oldest of twelve children.

Larry attended Kansas State University and was an avid history buff and enthusiast, whose passion for learning extended far beyond the classroom. He lived for the constant acquisition of knowledge and enjoyed imparting this knowledge to others. His love for sports, reading, and complex crossword puzzles filled his days with joy, and he always found time to unwind with his favorite television shows and documentaries.

An accomplished campaign manager, Larry played a pivotal role in the historic election of the first Black mayor of Manhattan, KS. His commitment to service and activism was evident throughout his life, particularly during his time in the U.S. Army and as the Director of the Douglas Community Center (Manhattan, KS) where he made significant contributions to the community.

Larry is survived by his beloved spouse, Daisy "Dorothy" Nicholson, and his cherished children: Sandy Nicholson, Virgil Nicholson, James [Anna] Nicholson, Aleisa Nicholson, and Antwan [Talishia] Nicholson. He was a proud grandfather to Ebony Nicholson, Essence Nicholson, Angelisa Brunson, Camilla Brunson, Breanna [John] Brunson-Jackson, Jacquel Nicholson, Jasmine Nicholson, and ten great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his brothers, James "Butch" Nicholson, Leon [Lynn] Nicholson, and Willie "Snapper" Shavers; his sisters, Rosie "Bonnie" McGee, Madinah [Robert] Edmonson, Jeannette Shavers, and Williette Hoskins; daughter-in-law, Carol Nicholson, as well as a host of cousins and special friends, including Megan Bauman and Adam Oppy. Larry was preceded in death by his mother, Hilda "Lil Mama" Jennings-Blackmore, his father, Clarence Nicholson, his son, Lawrence [Carol] Nicholson, Jr., and several siblings, including Victor Johnson, Van Ray Johnson, Barbara Nicholson, and Howard Nicholson.

Larry's legacy of knowledge, leadership, and community service will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family and friends.
