Mabel Alberta King , 99, passed away Saturday, September 8, at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community. She was born northeast of Green, Kansas, in the Mayday community. She was the daughter of the late Ludwig F. Kaump and Fredarica Harris-Berger Kaump. Mabel attended the Star School until her family moved to the farmstead east of Riley, Kansas. There, she attended the Prairie Meadow School east of Riley, and graduated from Riley Rural High School in 1930 and from KSU in 1948. She began her teaching career in the fall of 1930, teaching for two years at the Prairie Meadow School, ten years at the Riley Grade School both in Riley, one year in Wellington, Kansas, and thirty years at the Theordore Roosevelt School in Manhattan, where she retired in 1973. Mrs. King was a member of the First Christian Church, the Morning Group, Do Day Ladies all of the church in Manhattan. Other groups to which she belonged were Delta Kappa Gamma, Phi Kappa Phi, Manhattan Area Retired Teachers Assosiation, La Sertoma Club, Sorosis Club and ShrineTin Lizzy Ladies. On April 20, 1957, she was married to Francis V. King Sr and he preceded her in death on November 24, 2006. Survivors include a son, Francis V. King Jr. and wife Gwen of Bernalillo, New Mexico; daughter, Mary Stover, and husband Gerry of Sapulpa, Oklahoma; nephew, Larry Kaump of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; neice, Mary Herbel of Shreveport, Louisiana; 9 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren and two great nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Francis V. King Sr., a sister, Glayds Kaump of Dodge City, Kansas, two brothers, Leland Kaump, Leslie Kaump of Riley; two daughters, Shriley Henton, Kay Ward; a sister, Ruth Kaump, and sister-in-law, Edith Kaump. Services are being held at Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home & Cremation, Wednesday, September 12 at 10:00am. Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 11 from 9am to 8pm with the family receiving friends from 6-8pm. Family has request donations to First Christian Church of Manhattan or The Shriner's Children's Hospital and may be sent to the funeral home.
