Almajean Birdsong, 88, of Manhattan, KS passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2019 in Manhattan, KS in her home. Almajean was born in Denver, CO on January 28, 1931, the daughter of Alfred and Eulala Pitts. She received her education in the Manhattan school systems. Almajean married JC Birdsong on January 11, 1957, they shared 51 glorious years together. During their union she stayed home and cared for their 9 children. She is survived by her children eldest to youngest: Dalbert (Ola) Kaiser (AL), Kelvin Kaiser (Manhattan, KS), Cynthia Artis (Manhattan, KS), Armetia (Rabbi Binyamin) Shelton (IL), Constance Birdsong (Manhattan, KS), Robert (Joy) Birdsong (TN), Kenneth (Linda) Birdsong (MS), Betty Harrison (AL). After raising her children, she joined the workforce as a homemaker at Crum’s Dormitory, a cook at Theta Phi, she retired in 1996 as a Supervisor at Kansas State University. She was a devout member of the Pilgrim Baptist Church and at the time of her passing she was the oldest living member of the Church. Almajean enjoyed serving her Church family and the Lord, singing in the Church choir, spending time with her family and friends, sewing, crocheting, doing puzzles, reading her Bible, collecting a variety of items including dolls and whatnots just to mention a few, and shopping. She participated in Bible study every Friday up until her death with Cynthia her daughter and Cathy Hatley. Other survivors include 15 Grandchildren aging from 41-11, three whom she helped raise, LaTrease Birdsong (TX), Tychelle S. Jones and Audrey L. Artis (Manhattan, KS) and 18 Great-Grandchildren. Almajean loved each one of her Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren and spoiled them all every chance she was given. Almajean was preceded in death by her parents, her husband JC Birdsong, daughter Audrey Lynne Birdsong, brother Alfred Eugene Pitts and sister Alfreda Pitts. Memorials in her name may be directed to Home Care and Hospice. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday July 30, 2019 at 11:00 AM at the Pilgrim Baptist Church. Burial to follow at Sunrise Cemetery. A Visitation will be held on Monday, July 29, 2019 from 6:00 PM till 8:00 PM at Carlson’s Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home and Cremation. Arrangements have been entrusted to Carlson’s Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home and Cremation.
