Burritt Samuel (Sam) Lacy Jr., M.D, Sam Lacy, 98, of Manhattan, died Friday, October 20th at Meadowlark Hills. He was born in West Virginia in 1919, son of Kate and Burritt Samuel Lacy, Sr., and grew up in New Jersey and northern New York. He received an undergraduate degree in chemistry from Harvard and an MD from Cornell Medical School in NYC. During WWII he served in the Medical Corps of the Army and came to Topeka in 1946. He moved to Manhattan in 1958 to work for the Riley County Guidance Center. He spent most of his career as a staff member at KSU’s student health service and lived in Manhattan for the rest of his life. He was active in various Manhattan community organizations, including many years as a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Sam is survived by his wife Yvonne of Boulder, CO, three daughters, Susan Lacy of Keene, NY, Jane McKinley of Boulder, CO, Anne Johnson of Meridian, MS; two sons, Mike Lacy of Fort Collins, CO, and Paul Lacy of Columbia, MO. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren as well as a host of devoted friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 siblings and first wife Ida Lacy. A memorial service will be held at a later date. For those wanting to make a contribution in his name, the family suggests donations to local, national and international organizations supporting healthcare for all, protection of the natural environment, alternative energy, and social justice.
