Eugene D. Gering

July 23, 1921 — July 12, 2012

Eugene D. Gering, 90, of Manhattan, passed Thursday, July 12th, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House. He was a retired mail carrier for the US Postal Service in Manhattan. Eugene Gering was born in Asherville, KS on July 23, 1921, the son of the late Jake and Lyla (Darrough) Gering. On June 25, 1950 at First United Methodist Church in Wamego, he was united in marriage to Johanna N. Casper, she preceded him death on Jan. 3, 2002. Gene served in the US Navy as a Yeoman 2nd class, serving on the USS Gilmore and the USS Currituck. He was a lifetime member of the Lee Pierson Post #1786 VFW, Pearce-Keller American Legion #17, National Letter Carriers Association, NRFEA (National Retired Federal Employees Association). Gene enjoyed dancing (Swing Dancing, Polka, Waltz,) and gardening where he was well known for his large tomatoes, roses and Peonies Survivors include a daughter, Debra J. (Dan) Chatelain, of Colorado Springs, CO; three sons Dennis R. (Jerry Ann) Gering, of Overland Park; Alan L.(Leisl) Gering, of Des Moines Iowa; Andy G. Gering, of Manhattan; and six grandchildren Gene is preceded in death by his wife, parents, four brothers- Virgil Gering, Donald Gering, Robert Gering, Richard Gering, and a sister, Dorothy Tate. Friends are invited to call Monday, July 16th, 2012 from 9:00am to 8:00pm at the funeral home with the family receiving friends from 6:00 - 8:00pm. A funeral service will be held at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home and Cremation at 2:00pm on Tuesday, July 17th, with burial at the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan. The family request donations to Terry C Johnson Center For Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University.
