Evelyn M. White

Evelyn M. White, 95, of Manhattan, Kansas, died on July 5, 2016. Born September 8, 1920 in Blue Mound, KS, to Earl and Ethel “Babe” (nee Husted) Orr, three week old Evelyn moved to a farm near Merrill, IA. She attended Liberty Consolidated Schools, earned a teaching certificate from Westmar College in Le Mars, IA, and taught primary school in the area. She married U.S. Army soldier Ama White in South City, NE, on her birthday in 1941. Evelyn began writing letters in elementary school as an English assignment, and her pen pal list grew to more than 200 over the years. She kept in contact with friends world-wide as she accompanied Ama to postings. She was among the first Army dependents to sail to Korea in 1946, and spent 6 years in Alaska. Evelyn led Kansas Shut-in Society, writing many letters to the home bound. Evelyn called Manhattan, KS, home since 1966, and resided at Meadowlark for 12 years. She was a very active member of Sedalia Community Church. She and Ama helped educate nurses through a scholarship in their name at the College of the Ozarks. She was a strong supporter of the Riley County and Manhattan Food Banks; the Manhattan Crisis Center; Manhattan and Hawarden, IA, libraries; and the Riley County Historical Association and the Plymouth County Museum in LeMars, IA. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband. Left to cherish her memory are daughters Alma McIntire (Fayetteville, NC), and her children Janice (Fayetteville) and Terry (Holly Springs, NC) and his family; and Marsha White and Glen Boyls (Fairfax Station, VA) and their children Christopher (Fairfax Station) and Brian (Ann Arbor, MI) and his family; and many relatives and friends. A celebration of her life will be held at Irvin-Parkview Funeral home on August 5 at 11 AM with Pastor Kevin Larson officiating. Burial at Ft Riley cemetery is on August 9. Please, no flowers. A memorial fund is established at Sedalia Community Church, or give generously to your local food bank or library, and visit often the aging or homebound. At Mrs. White's request the casket will remain closed.
