Frances Alberta Moyer, 97, of Manhattan, KS died peacefully October 1, 2014 at Lyle House in the Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community.
Frances was born August 18, 1917 in Onaga, Kansas to Charles and Adda Belle (Brown) Crumbaker. She was the third child in a family of 11 children. Frances graduated from Onaga High School in 1935. Upon graduation, she moved to Manhattan and attended Sacred Heart Business Academy. She then worked for the Agronomy Department at Kansas State College. She was united in marriage to Wendell A. Moyer on October 5, 1941 in Manhattan. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church~ Manhattan, UMW Current Issues Circle, a volunteer at the church, a 50 year member of Chapter GU of PEO, and many bridge clubs in Manhattan.
After their marriage, Wendell and Frances moved to Wellington, Kansas, where Wendell was the Assistant County Agent. In 1943, Wendell enlisted in the Navy as an Ensign and served his country until 1945. During this time, Frances worked in Manhattan at the college. Upon Wendell's release from the Navy, they moved to Seneca, Kansas, and later to Beloit where he served as the county agent.
In 1951, Wendell and Frances moved to Manhattan where Wendell was employed by the Kansas State Extension Service. Frances typed thesis and dissertations for several years and then worked for DPRA for 13 years. Wendell and Frances both retired in 1980 and enjoyed traveling, golf, and fishing trips with family and friends.
A priority in both of their lives was time spent with their families. Frances is survived by two daughters, Marlene Kay VerBrugge, widow of Jan VerBrugge, of Manhattan; Cheryl 'Sherri' Ann Matthews and her husband Tom, of Kansas City, KS; grandchildren: Cori Hill (Tim), Kelly Glasscock (Lindsey), Scott Matthews (Erica) and Ryan Matthews (Nichole); great-grandchildren: Austin, Jaden and Gabriella Hill, Lilian and Adelynn Glasscock, Brady Matthews and Colton & Isabella Matthews. Also surviving are Marlene's step daughters, Kristen VerBrugge Hedges (Blake) and Marci VerBrugge Rhind (Scott) and their children, Dylan, Apryl, Isabella, Jake Hedges and MacGregor Rhind. Also surviving are her sisters, Nada Belle McCool, of Wamego; Ardath Murray, of Bartlesville; Roberta 'Bobbi' Peters, of Overland Park; Carol Adolph, of Manhattan; Marge Knorr, of Gardner.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wendell on June 30, 1997; three brothers, Dale, Don and Evan Crumbaker; 2 sisters, Helen Dent and Dorothy Shandy; and son-in-law, Jan VerBrugge.
Friends are welcome to call Sunday, Oct. 5, from 1:00 pm ~ 8:00 pm at Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home & Cremation, 1317 W. Poyntz. Visitation will be on Monday, October 6 from 9:30 am ~ 10:30 am at the First United Methodist Church followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 11:00 am with Rev. Melanie Martin officiating. Burial will follow at the Sunset Cemetery in Manhattan, KS.
