Fred Benton Hadle, 96, of Manhattan passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 5, 2013 at his residence. Fred was an Assistant Professor in Horticulture at Kansas State University and was Superintendent of the Horticultural Farm at Ashland Bottom from 1951 until his retirement in 1984. Fred was born in Lineville, Iowa, on September 7, 1917. He was the son of the late Halla (Barr) and John Henry Hadle. He attended Lineville High and later earned Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from Kansas State University in Horticulture. Fred served in the Army in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Fred was an active member of Ashland Community Church, a Life Member of VFW Post 1786 and was a former member of the Pearce-Keller Post No. 17, both in Manhattan. Fred is survived by two sons, Gary Hadle, of Riley and Stephen Hadle and wife Diana of Manhattan; 12 grandchildren, and 23 great grandchildren. Fred was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Joshua Hadle in 2001. His greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed camping and hiking in the Colorado mountains with his family, and with his wife took bus tours all over the United States. He never missed a Sunday at church. Visitation will be held from 1:00pm - 8:00 p.m. Monday, December 9, 2013 and 9:00 am - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 10, 2013, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home & Cremation. A funeral service will be held at the Ashland Community Church on Wednesday, December 11th, at 10:30am with Pastor Paul Barkey officiating. Cremation will follow after the service with the inurnment at the Ashland Cemetery at a later date.
