Gaston A. 'Gus' Catalan, Jr. Gaston August 'Gus' Catalan, Jr., 81, of Manhattan, died Saturday, December 8th, at Via Christi Village. Gus was born in Portsmouth, RI on May 17, 1931, the son of the late Gaston August Catalan, Sr. and Edwina (Perry) Catalan. He grew up in Portsmouth, RI and in 1950 graduated from the Rogers High School, Newport, RI. Gaston A. 'Gus' Catalan, Jr. and Gail E. Holiday were united in marriage on July 2, 1955 in Middletown, RI and she survives of the home. Gus was retired from the US Army as a MSG, serving during the Vietnam and Korean Conflicts. He was the manager from 1978-1989 of the NCO Club at Fort Riley after his retirement from military duty, and in the last few years he could be found volunteering at the Meadowlark Retirement Village, a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan, former member of Lee Pierson V. F. W. Post #1786 and the Retired Council at Ft. Riley. During his military he served in Korea, Vietnam, Germany, France, Ft. Benning, GA, Ft. Bragg, NC and Ft. Riley. Mr. Catalan is survived by his wife, Gail, of the home; a daughter, Robin Catalan, of San Antonio, TX; grandson, Anthony Sharpe; sisters, Christine Buskirk, of RI; Virginia Apps, of PA; brothers, David Catalan, of RI; Roger and Thomas Catalan both of Florida. Gus was preceded in death by sisters Evelyn Green and Carolyn Guillemette and brothers Richard and Alfred Catalan. A memorial service will be held at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home & Cremation at 10:30am on Tuesday, December 18th. Inurnment will follow at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery with Military Honors by the Ft. Riley Color Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Seven Dolors Catholic Church, 731 Pierre, Manhattan or donor's choice
