Harold "Mike" C. O'Malley

Harold Clinton “Mike” O’Malley, 95, of Manhattan, passed away Friday, December 14, 2018. Harold was born in Wabaunsee, KS on January 23, 1923, the son of Edward and Linnie (Spaulding) O’Malley. When Harold was 3 years old the family moved to Clay Center, KS where he attended and graduated from Clay Center High School Class of 1940. He was drafted on February 5, 1943, into the United States Army. Harold was assigned to the 336thArtillery Battalion, 87th Infantry Division and participated in the European Theater as an Artillery Sargent in the Battle of the Bulge. On July 21, 1943, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Walker, KS, he married the love of his life, Georgine “Jean” Louise Brown. They were married for 63 years. He resided in Manhattan from 1945 to the present and from 1955 at 736 Frey Drive. He was a lifetime member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church and supporter of the Manhattan Catholic Schools. Harold’s career in life was with the Union Pacific Railroad and was employed for 39 years before his retirement. He was active in many organizations in the Manhattan Community including: American Legion, VFW, Seven Dolors Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge, Scout Master for the BSA Seven Dolors Catholic Church Troop 72, ManKan Campers Assn., Union Pacific Old Timers Assn., Tuttle Creek Lake assn., and The Battle of the Bulge Assn. He was one of the original founders of the Tuttle Creek Lake Association Kids Fishing Clinic and he was instrumental in the construction of the fish cleaning station at the Marina Cove on Tuttle Creek Lake. He enjoyed the company of his many friends and was considered by many to be a Master Angler. He also enjoyed a Cold Red Beer. Harold was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his two children, Barbara J. Burson and husband Gerald, and John E. O’Malley and wife Jody; his grandchildren: Patrick A. Burson, Jeanette M. Burson, Gwendolyn J. Burson, G. Michael Burson, Shawn E. O’Malley, John P. O’Malley, Jeffery M. O’Malley; his great-grandchildren: Reid Tedder, Liam Burson, Nora Burson, Aurora Burson, Aislinn Burson, Clare O’Malley, Augustus O’Malley and Tyler Trout and one sister Mary Jane Brown of Manhattan. He is proceeded in death by his parents, his wife Jean, an infant daughter, Kathleen Ann. One sister Mable Pugh, two brothers, Louis “Pat” and Thomas O’Malley. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, December 20, 2018, at 10:00 AM at Seven Dolors Catholic Church. Burial to follow at the St George Cemetery, St George, KS. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 19, 2018, from 6:00 to 7:00 PM with a rosary starting at 7:00 PM at the Carlson’s Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home and Cremation. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Harold O’Malley Memorial Fund.
