Marianna Elizabeth Wurtz, 83, of Manhattan, passed away Thursday, October 18th. Marianna Simpson was born in Miltonvale, on September 18, 1929, the daughter of the late Ernest A. and Oda (Hardesty) Simpson. She grew up in Miltonvale and graduated from the Miltonvale High School in 1947, attended Kansas State University where she received her Bachelors of Science and her Masters in Education. On June 2, 1951 at Miltonvale, Kansas she married Lawrence V. Wurtz. Marianna enjoyed teaching and special education, teaching in many one room school houses in the area, also at Frankfort Kansas, Vermilion, Kansas and retired from Marysville Grade School, Marysville, Kansas. She was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Manhattan, where she belonged to the Altar Society, the Welcome Club and the Cisco Neighbor Club. Survivors include her four sons Victor Wurtz, of Manhattan; Larry Wurtz, of Manhattan; Verl Wurtz and wife Kris of Columbus, Nebraska; Kevin Wurtz, and wife Christina of Andover, Kansas; a brother, Darrell Simpson, of Phoenix, Arizona and 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchild. Mariana was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 4 brothers, and 2 sisters. Friends may call on Monday from 9:00am to 8:00pm at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home & Cremation, 1317 Poyntz, with a parish vigil service being held at 7:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00am Tuesday, October 23rd at the St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Manhattan with buirial following at the Sunrise Cemetery. The family request donations to American Heart Association or Terry C. Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research at KSU and may be sent to the funeral home.
