Marvin D Carl, 77, of Manhattan, passed away Sunday, December 8th, at Via Christi Village. Marvin was born in Middlebranch, Nebraska on October 9, 1936, the son of Adeline Rose (Podany) Ruroede, and the late Delbert Carl. On Feb 10, 1962 at Norfolk, Nebraska he married Janet Hansen who survives him. Marvin and Janet renewed their vows on August 5, 2013 at the St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Marvin was in the Army for 22 yrs serving outside the Continental United States in Alaska, Hawaii, Korea for 2 tours, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Viet Nam and Germany. He received the National Defense service medal, Army commendation Medal, On Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry, Cross with Palm, Good Conduct Medal, Seventh Award, Expert Infantry Badge, Meritorious Service Medal Marvin graduated from the Ewing, NE High School in 1955, business school in Omaha, College and after his retirement from the Army he became a student at KSU, graduating with a business degree in May 1980. He joined the Theitis Meat Packing Company in Great Bend, Topeka & Wichita, upon his retirement from there he worked for the Federal Accounting Office 'FAO' at Fort Riley retiring in 1995. As a good Christian, he helped many young service men and their families that needed help with transportation and food. He loved children and during a stay in Okinawa and Germany he was a foster parent, sponsoring and supporting many children and teen groups. While in Germany he was a fishing warden and during the 1970's and 80's he was active in helping with rescue and retrieval of drowning victims at Tuttle Creek Reservoir. Marvin was proactive against racism during his service years as well as the rest of his life. Marvin was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Manhattan; Life Member of VFW Post 1786 (past commander), and was a former member of the Pearce-Keller Post No. 17, both in Manhattan. Marvin is also survived by wife, Janet of the home; his mother Adeline Rose (Podany) Ruroede, of Oneill, Nebraska; two daughters, Margaret Parks, of Salina and Beth Carl, of Manhattan; also surviving are four grandchildren Danielle Parks, Damien Parks, Carson Becker, Madaline White and also step-grandchildren and three great granddaughters; a sister, Ruby Williamson, of Orchard, Nebraska; and a brother, Delbert Carl, Jr, husband of Pat of Ewing, Nebraska. Memorial masses will be said at the St. Thomas More Catholic Church, in Manhattan, with Father Don Zimmerman officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, Manhattan, Kansas.
