Murt Hanks III (Sam), age 59, of Manhattan, died Wednesday, August 24, 2016, at the Good Shepherd’s Hospice in Manhattan. Born on September 13, 1956, in Manhattan, Kansas, the son of Murt Hanks Jr. and Barbara Jean (Starnes) Hanks. Murt (Sam) was raised in Manhattan where he graduated from Manhattan High School in 1974. As a young man, Murt was associated with the Men of Distinction (MOD). Soon after that Sam attended Kansas State University, where he was affiliated with the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, an African-American Fraternity at KSU. In his adult life he worked in construction for many years; later to pursue his studies in religion and spirituality from several Theology Schools. On September 8, 2010, he was united in marriage to Lois V. Jones-Dillard, in Manhattan. Murt (Sam’s) past-times were spent gardening, listening to music and communicating via social media, with a host of friends and relatives; although he truly enjoyed his daily visits with his Auntie (Alice), of Manhattan. He is preceded in death by death by his parents, Murt and Barbara Hanks, and a great nephew Ja’Cai Hanks. He is survived by: Lois Jones-Dillard-Hanks (wife) Manhattan; Darlene Matthews (step-daughter) of Manhattan; Odell Murt Thomas (son) of Manhattan; Marva Hanks, (sister) of Wamego; Roberta Graves, (sister) Manassas, Virginia; and Roderick Hanks, (brother) of Wichita; two grandchildren of Manhattan; and a host of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, and cousins; and friends. “Home Going” Celebration of Life and Remembrance will be held on Monday August 29, 2016 @ 10:00 a.m. at the Irvin Parkview Funeral Home and Cremation with Reverend Clifford Starnes officiating. Burial will follow at the Sunset Cemetery.
