Nedra L. Sylvis, 86, of Manhattan, passed away Sunday, October 29th, at her home. She had lived in Manhattan since 1953, moving here from Smith Center, KS. Nedra was born in Madison, WI on February 5, 1931, the daughter of the late Lucille (Hoy) Evans and Dick Blaine Evans. In 1948 she graduated from the Great Bend High School, she then moved to Emporia to attend Sunflower College which is now Emporia State University where she received a certificate to be a school teacher. She taught first grade for 4 years and decided it wasn’t for her. On December 26, 1954, in Manhattan, she was united in marriage to Harold Dean Sylvis at the First Christian Church. She and Harold were married for 45 years until his death in 2000. Nedra attended the First Christian Church and the First United Methodist Church both in Manhattan. She was a the Financial Secretary for many years, was in the woman’s circle, was a Sunday school teacher, she sang in the church choir, was a Deacon and Elder. Nedra was an administrative assistant at Kansas State University in the History Department as a computer/keyboard operator for 12 yrs and also was a dissertations typist for over 25 yrs. She was an active and proud member of Gamma Lambda Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority. Nedra is survived by her children, daughter, Lynda M. (Scott ) Schimke, of Lansing, KS; her son, H. Kent (Kari ) Sylvis, of Carrollton, TX; two sisters, Margaret Lou (Vernon) Smith of La Cruses. NM; Nancy Kay King of Littleton, CO; 4 Grandchildren: Alaura Katherine Sylvis, Lance Aaron Schimke, Marissa Noelle Schimke, Christian Evan Sylvis. Nedra was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Harold D Sylvis. Friends are invited to meet with the family 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Sunday, November 5th at Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home & Cremation. On Monday, November 6th at 10:00 AM at the funeral home, a 'Celebration of Life' will be held. Burial will follow at Sunrise Cemetery beside her late husband Harold. The family requests any donations be directed to the Flint Hills Bread Basket, 905 Yuma, Manhattan or the Manhattan Public Library and sent to the charity or in care of the funeral home.
