Ruby D. Mann

July 23, 1922 — January 12, 2019

Ruby D. Hunter Mann, 96, of Manhattan, passed away on Saturday, January 12, 2019, at Via Christi Village. She was born on July 23, 1922, at Dr. Miller's Hospital in Council Grove. At that time her two older brothers were just recovering from scarlet fever so Dr. Randles thought it necessary to have the baby at the hospital, an unusual event, as in those days most babies were born at home. The cradle roll certificate from the White City Methodist Church in 1922 lists her name as Dorothy Mae, daughter of Reuby and Bertha Brittian Hunter. Later her name was changed to Ruby Dorothy, as she looked so much like her father, Reuby so her name became Ruby D. for the rest of her life. While in Melrose Country School, she especially enjoyed participating in Morris County achievement contests. She won numerous awards giving declamations and also musical numbers. She graduated from White City High School in 1940 and began teaching under a Normal Training Certificate at Prairie Star, then Marion Hill and also Stone Chapel Rural Schools in Morris County. During the summers she attended Emporia Teachers College, each year. She taught at the Washington Grade in Council Grove for three years. She married Hubert Mann in 1946 and continued teaching country school for several years. They owned and operated the Mann grocery and Locker Plant at Skiddy, Kansas for 25 years. After Hubert's death in 1972, she moved to Manhattan and worked at KSU Central Mail for nine years. She later married Russell David Janke who died in 1990. She was a member of Westview Community Church, the Lone Wranglers Square Dance Club, Manhattan Bowling League, KSU Retirees Club, was president of the Auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. She participated with the Manhattan Uptown Band. One of her most enjoyable club memberships was as a member and president of the Toastmistress Club of Manhattan. Ruby D. loved God, loved to dance, loved life, especially having frequent family dinners. She was always ready to play card games, tell stories or travel. She often said she was so happy when the wheels were rolling. She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Allen D. Hunter, Vance D. Hunter and a sister Dessie Hunter. She is survived by her three sons, Brittain Mann of Emporia, Joe Mann of Manhattan, and Randall Mann also of Manhattan; her daughter Sheila Roffler of Manhattan, five grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.
