Bettie Sue Greig, 89, of Manhattan, KS passed away on Monday, December 5, 2016, in her home, in the care of her sons. Sue was born in Stamps, AR, in 1927, to the late Gladys (Smith) and Jesse C. Hamm. She also lived for a while in Forrester, AR, and attended Arkansas Southern University in Magnolia, AR, where she earned an A.A. in Home Economics in 1946. She then attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, AR, where she earned a B.B.E. in secondary Education and Chemistry in 1948, and a B.S.H.E. in Food and Nutrition in 1949. She earned a M.S. in Dietetics, Restaurant, and Institutional Management from Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS, in 1968. She was a Registered Dietician and a Certified Secondary Teacher. She had an extensive professional background, which included serving as a teacher for the Manhattan Public Schools, a Teaching and Administrative Dietician at Kansas State University, Director of Food Service for USD #383 schools in Manhattan, KS, and an Adjunct Professor at Kansas State University's School of Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management. She also consulted for Clay County Hospital in Clay Center, KS, and the area Technical and Vocational School in Manhattan, KS. Sue had numerous professional publications and research papers published over her career, together with presentations and participation at various workshops and conferences. She was an active member of many professional associations, and served in multiple leadership roles in these associations, including the American Dietetic Association, President of the Kansas Dietetic Association, President of the American School Food Service Association, President of the Kansas School Food Service Association, and the Kansas Department of Education. She testified at a number of separate committee hearings in the United States Congress, as well as the Kansas State Legislature, concerning dietetics and school food service. During her career, she received a number of prestigious awards, including the American School Food Service Association State Presidents Award, the American School Food Service Association National Presidents Gold Award, the American Dietetic Association Outstanding Service Award, the Kansas State University Distinguished Service Award, the Kansas School Food Service Association, the Distinguished Service Award for Contributions to Child Nutrition, and the Kansas Distinguished Dietician. She was recognized for 'Sue Greig Day' in Kansas by declaration of Governor Finney in 1991. Sue was also active in a number of local civic and charitable groups, and was a founding member of Trinity Presbyterian Church. She was a longtime supporter of many events and activities at Kansas State University. Sue participated in a number of bridge and dinner bridge clubs and was able to travel extensively overseas, including visits to England, Scotland, Europe, Russia, India, Australia, Scandinavia, and South America. Sue is survived by her sons Hal (Francine) Greig, James K. Greg III, and David Greig; her five grandchildren Elizabeth (Mischa) Hopson, William Greig, Jake Greig, Jonathan Greig, and Jennifer greig; and one great-grandchild Emma Grace Hopson. She is also survived by her sister Clara Mitchell, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband James K. Greig Jr., and her brother Harold Hamm. Sue will be dearly missed by all that met, worked with, or knew her. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 7th, 2017 at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1110 College Ave., Manhattan, KS, with inurnment at Sunrise Cemetery to follow.
