Virginia Mae Helget

December 19, 1937 — March 17, 2014

Virginia Mae Helget, 76, of Manhattan, passed away Monday, March 17th, at Mercy Regional Health Center. Virginia Mae Smith was born in Delphos, Kansas on December 19, 1937 to the late Lester L. and Jennie R. (Hurtig) Smith. She graduated from Delphos High School and attended Kansas State University in Manhattan. On September 24, 1960, Virginia was united in marriage to Bernard J. Helget. Virginia was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Virginia is survived by her husband, Bernard of the home; her children, Rusty (Dianne) Helget, of Onaga, Kansas, Pat (Ardel) Helget, of Delphos, Mike Helget, of Keats, Kansas, Jim (Firma) Helget, of Hays, Andy (Rebekah) Helget, of Wamego, Connie (John) Jackson, of Topeka and Ginny (Michael) Helget, of Wamego, Joe (Randi) Helget, of Ottawa, Kansas; a brother Wayne Smith of Delphos; sisters Joanne Fitzgerald of Boscobel, Wisconsin, Deanna Wier of Mapleton, Kansas, June Gawith of Pratt and brother-in-law Eugene Helget of Kansas City. She is also survived by her 17 grandchildren and her family dog, 'Wally'. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and sister who loved all of them dearly with all her heart and soul. Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, brother-in-law Dennis Helget and niece Becky Peters. Friends are invited to call Tuesday, March 18th, from 5:00pm - 8:00pm at the funeral home, and on Wednesday, March 19, from 9:00am - 7:00pm, with a vigil service beginning at 7:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the St. Thomas More Catholic Church at 10:00am on Thursday, March 20th, with Fr. Don Zimmerman officiating, and burial to follow after the service at Sunset Cemetery in Manhattan.
